Glass Skin

"Glass skin" is a term from Korean beauty trends that refers to a complexion that looks exceptionally smooth, clear or poreless, and radiant—almost like glass.

Achieving this look involves a multi-step skincare routine that focuses on hydration, exfoliation, and layering products along with professional treatments to minimize imperfections and encourage healthy skin.

How to Glow at Home?

It’s all in the layering. Use multiple lightweight layers of hydrating products so skin looks dewy and plump. Being said, there's no single, universally agreed-upon way to achieve glass skin, but a few key steps are needed to put into consideration.

1. Double-cleanse with non-drying cleansers. First, use an oil-based cleanser that removes dirt, makeup and sunscreen sufficiently, then move on to a gentle hydrating face wash to for an even deeper clean. This ensures that the not-so-obvious grime is gone without stripping your skin of the moisture that's so important to the glass skin look.

2. To achieve glass skin without the help of makeup (aka Fake it 'til you make it), it really comes down to exfoliating off the dead skin that contributes to a dull complexion. It also helps the rest of your products penetrate your skin better, allowing them to work more effectively.

Note: You may want to save this step for nighttime, especially if you choose to use photosensitizing acids as your means of exfoliation. Alpha and beta hydroxy acid-based peels and face masks that promote that glassy glow when eliminating dead skin cells can also cause irritation leading to further transepidermal water loss (TEWL). Please check your skin! Should you notice tightness, very fine flaking, skip using them and just calm and hydrate your skin. And always remember to apply (and reapply) sunscreen as the last step of your morning skin-care routine.

3. Layer on the actives. To really get a headstart on the moisture, follow up with serums. Serums deliver a higher concentration of active ingredients to target specific concerns, like dull complexion, dehydration and fine lines… just to mention a few.

A couple perfect options for pressing into your skin:

4. Apply a do-it-all hydrating moisturizer or an oil serum. They reinforce and protect your skin barrier — applying them at the end of your routine is important to seal in all that moisture into your skin. We recommend face oil bases that are non-comedogenic and contain ingredients that hydrate and nourish the skin, such as jojoba oil, argan oil, grapeseed oil or rosehip oil. Oil based products are very healing and in many cases even those with oily skin types that are prone to breakouts — can use them and reap their benefits.

5. Protect with SPF
Prevention is key to maintaining healthy, glowing skin. Whether you choose to apply a separate moisturizer and sunscreen or just a very moisturizing sunscreen, hydration and protection are arguably the most important steps in the glass-skin routine. Now is not the time for a moisturizer or sunscreen that promises a mattifying finish — look for promises of glowiness in order for full glassification.

Additional Tips

  • Hydration: Drink plenty of water to support skin hydration from within.

  • Healthy Diet: A diet rich in vitamins and antioxidants can enhance skin health and appearance.

  • Consistency: Needless to say, glass skin doesn't happen overnight. While you can immediately make it look dewier with makeup, that next-level clarity and smoothness takes time. Achieving and maintaining glass skin requires a consistent skincare routine over time.

  • Combining professional treatments with a diligent at-home skincare routine can help you achieve and maintain that sought-after glass skin look. This is also true when wishing to have an overall healthy skin.

  • Adjust the products and steps according to your skin needs
